The Shell is an artifact that appears in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Lost Alpha and all canon S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. In Shadow of Chernobyl it is named the Flame Battery.

When wearing this artifact the denaturization of proteins happens slower. In other words, the flesh is able to endure higher temperatures and burns less. In itself it is an expensive and rare thing.
- Inventory description, v1.30013 - 1.4005

Born in the 'Springboard' anomaly. When wearing this artifact, the chance of radiation damage is dramatically reduced, because the artifact repels about a quarter of all radioactive particles around it. It is an expensive and rare thing in itself. Emits radiation.
- Inventory description, v1.4007

Overview[]

v1.30013 - 1.3003:
v1.4002 - 1.4005:
  • Much heavier and not coded to spawn from its parent anomaly.
  • Different, more complicated property set assigned.
  • Useful, but not as useful as the corresponding Spring incarnation.
v1.4007:
  • Still heavy, but now retooled as the top-flight "radiation protect" artifact.
  • Parent anomaly changed to Springboard rendering it considerably more available.

Notes[]

All versions:
  • A tin on a bridge crossmember beneath the 'Bandit sniper' in Garbage contains two Shells.
v1.30013 - 1.3003:
  • With the exception of the above note, only seems to be available from the bodies of dead stalkers.
  • No other specimens yet discovered in the wild.
v1.4002+
v1.4007:
  • Property set alteration now means that this artifact is more easily available to the player, and a lot more useful.

Trivia[]

v1.30013+:
  • The Shell was introduced after Shadow of Chernobyl and the icon used in subsequent games is now used in the Lost Alpha for the Jewel artifact, which also only has positive properties (to v1.4005)
v1.4007:
  • Wearing four of these on the belt gives excellent early-game "radiation protection" whatever suit the player wears.
  • Doesn't 'Emit radiation'. This is a gamefile typo.
